Fortis agrees to purchase insurer American Bankers

Article Abstract:

Fortis AG is planning to acquire American Bankers Insurance Group Inc. (ABIG) for $2.6 million in cash. Under the terms of the proposed deal, Fortis will assume responsibility for debt worth $194 million. The board of directors of both firms have given their approval to the deal. ABIG stockholders would receive $55 per common share under the deal, which would make Fortis one of the largest specialty insurers in the US.
