Article Abstract:

Relations between Palestine and Israel could improve with a new Israeli government, and Ehud Barak replacing Binyamin Netanyahu as Israel's leader. There is still concern that Barak's policy toward Jewish settlements on the West Bank may be little different from those of his predecessor. The outgoing Israel defense minister has authorized the enlargement of a Jewish West Bank settlement called Maale Adumim. This would involve a division of the West Bank into two, so causes concern to Palestinians.

Back to Oslo, even Camp David

Article Abstract:

Relations between the Palestinians and Israel are improving and this is reflected in a meeting in Oslo, Norway, and the start of talks on a final settlement. President Bill Clinton has offered help in achieving an agreement. A deadline of Feb 13 2000 has been set for a framework agreement and a 'permanent status' pact is scheduled for Sep of that year. Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, is still concerned about Israeli settlements which have speeded up under Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak.
