Friends from afar: Moscow breakthrough boosts Taipei's diplomacy

Article Abstract:

Taiwan and Russia have forged an economic pact in the early part of Sep 1992 which calls for the establishment of two privately-run offices in Moscow and Taipei. The offices will grant visas and promote the interests of the two governments. Russia reportedly seeks through the pact, an economic assistance from Taiwan similar to the $3 billion aid extended to it by South Korea in 1990. It is doubtful, however, whether Taiwan will grant the aid as no diplomatic links exist between the two countries. Furthermore, Taiwan is not assured that trade benefits will accrue to it if it extends aid to the former communist country.

Taipei loser now has other things to fry

Article Abstract:

Lee Hsin-chang is a Taiwanese social activist who ran unsuccessfully as a socialist candidate in Taiwan's 1992 elections. The large debts that Lee ran up while running are now forcing him to supplement his small income by working in a night market. Lee realizes that his anti-capitalist views place him far outside the political mainstream in Taiwan but he refuses to compromise his principles or to side against the working people. As a leader of the Houseless People's Union in 1989 he led a significant protest against the high cost of housing.

No way to treat an ally: US pressures on trade irk Taipei leaders

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's political leaders are taking offense at US pressure about trade policy such as intellectual property rights. Negotiations on the rights ceased in Mar 1993, and Taiwan's government is trying to prevent the US from declaring the country in violation of such rights. Taiwan passed amendments to its copyright law, which the US demanded, but eight articles from the bill which the US negotiators wanted were excluded.
