Fright capital: Japanese direct investments likely to fall

Article Abstract:

Japan's mid-1980's buying frenzy, which fueled a leap in direct foreign investments from US$12 billion to US$67.5 billion in four years, is over. The depression of share prices in the Tokyo stock market has reduced capital for overseas operations and expansion. In 1991, Japanese corporate acquisitions in the US dropped to US$3.8 billion from US$11.9 billion. In Europe, it was half the previous year's at US$1.9 billion, while in Asia it dropped to US$320 million from US$1.7 billion.

Engines of growth: 'made in Asia' - on a Japanese machine

Article Abstract:

The Japanese Ministryof International Trade and Industry (MITI) has revealed that Asia's newly industrialized countries (NICs) and most Asean countries are becoming increasingly dependent on Japan for machinery necessary to produce higher-valuegoods and improve factories. However, NICs have not been able to enter the Japanese market as much as Asean countries. This reliance on Japanese intermediate inputs is expected to cause increased trade deficits.

The Japanese are back

Article Abstract:

The Japan Travel Bureau Inc estimates that around 12 million Japanese will travel overseas in 1992. This marks a 14% increase from the previous year's figures. The travel agency estimates that each traveler will spend an average of US$3,500, injecting much-needed cash into Asian economies. Japanese travel accounts help offset the trade surpluses Japan usually incurs with Asian countries.
