From tea to artistry

Article Abstract:

Niall Phillips Architects (NPA) is working on a project to convert a 1960s tea factory into an artistic centre. The centre includes a set of studios for young artists, lecture rooms, an exhibition area and a cafe. The client is charitable organisation Artspace, and a Lottery grant and private sources have provided the funding. NPA opted to work with the existing building and to make any changes obvious, so there are partitions and screens for the studios, and circulation routes follow the lines of the vaulted ceiling. The former teabag assembly floor forms an impressive central hall.

Cultural revolution

Article Abstract:

Niall Phillips Architects (NPA) has worked on the conversion of a Welsh working-men's institute building into an arts centre. The public building now includes an exhibition area and snooker hall, as well as the original public hall. NPA opted to retain original features of the 1908 building wherever possible, but changes to the hall include the introduction of a separate entrance, redevelopment of the backstage area and increased stage area. The snooker hall straddles two floors. It has an opaque glass wall with windows to allow viewing by other users of the centre.
