Funchal elevated to bigger aircraft

Aeroportos e Navagacao Aerea da Madeira in Madeira , Portugal, opened a major extension of its runway of Sep 15, 2000. This brought the length of the runway to a total of 2,781 meters, which makes it long enough to take aircraft up to Boeing 747 size and nearly doubles the airport's capacity to 3.5 million passengers a year. Along with the construction of the runway extension, the $450 million project included associated road improvements and building of car parks and a new terminal complex, and the renovation of the old terminal.

Vienna International Airport saw its turnover increase by 6%, its operating profit by 12.4% and net profit by 12.7% during the first half of FY 2000. Passenger traffic also rose by 6.2%, chiefly due to its strong performance during the second quarter. Cargo business was even stronger, with tonnage handled rising by 16.3%. The airport also implemented the AAA Project with Austrian Airlines and Austro Control for optimizing work processes between the three organizations.
