AUSTRIA: JOWOOD BETTING ON INTERNET GAMES

Article Abstract:

The Austrian computer game developer JoWooD is preparing to benefit from the expected boom in internet games. The company's first on-line game is the electronic puzzle Think-X, which is currently available at the www.Freeloader.com site of British Pure Entertainment Games. JoWooD has presented the international versions of its games VerkehrsGigant and Volker, of which it has sold 100,000 and 70,000 copies in the German versions. The VerkehrsGigant is now available also in a Chinese version. The PC game IndustrieGigant has sold 700,000 copies. JoWooD says that the internationalisation of products is vital to recover the development costs of Sch 7mn-14mn per game. JoWooD, which has its administration and sales department in Rottenmann and development centre in Ebensee, holds a share of 2% on the German-speaking computer game market. The market leader, Electronic Arts of the US, holds 18%.
