New Zealand has raised interest rates when Australian rates were lowered High rates in New Zealand depressed an economy that was already weakening. The New Zealand economy should show some recovery in 1999, and Australian growth is likely to slow. Australia is making tax and import tariff reforms. Could it happen again?
Article Abstract:
Inflation is a problem that has arisen relatively recently, and there was price stability in the United Kingdom between the 17th century and 1914. Deflation became a problem in the 1930s, and could become a problem again. It may be linked to a drop in demand or a rise in productivity. Excess capacity has led to some price falls in the 1990s, and commodity prices have also fallen, while policymakers have not always adjusted their monetary policy, which appears to be too tights in G7 countries.
