Gene-splicing hysteria is brewing

Article Abstract:

Japanese beer maker Sapporo Breweries has followed the lead of Kirin Brewery Co by announcing a boycott of genetically modified corn and the use of only on-gene-spliced corn in its brewing operations. Both brewers cited consumer concerns about the safety of such genetically engineered products, although Kirin considers gene-spliced corn safe to use. However, concerns about gene-spliced agricultural products are more ideological and emotional rather than scientific. Such products are actually superior, yet if industry giants such as these brewers reject them, their benefits will never be enjoyed.

Oil-spill cleanup suffers from lack of innovation

Article Abstract:

Oil-spill cleanups have to contend with inferior technologies because of government regulatory roadblocks on biotechnology research. The US Environmental Protection Agency under the Toxic Substances Control Act, inhibits research on any new organisms that could degrade the oil, on the grounds of being a potential environment risk. It further means that all research proposals for bioremediation field trials are reviewed on a case-to-case basis.

A truce for India's biotechnology battle

Article Abstract:

Indian government officials ordered scientists at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute to stop the field trial of an eggplant that is insect-resistant. India's policies on biotechnology products may be a hindrance in producing new and improved plant varieties . These restrictions are described to be unnecessary and unscientific compared with the traditional genetic engineering techniques used in the agricultural market.
