General Cigar strikes Swedish match deal

General Cigar Holdings Inc. has reached an agreement to sell some of its cigar brands to Swedish Match AB. General Cigar is selling the brands for $200 million. The move is an attempt by General Cigar to withdraw from the mass market cigar industry. The company will sell Garcia y Vega, White Owl, Tiparillo, and Tijuana Smalls. Two production facilities in Alabama and the Dominican Republic are also included in the deal.

Tabacalera, Seita to merge, forming tobacco giant
Article Abstract:
Tabacalera SA has agreed to merge its operations with Seita SA of France. The deal will create the fourth-largest tobacco company in the world. The merged entity will have a market capitalization of approximately 6.7 billion euros. Tabacalera is based in Spain. Under the deal, French cigarette brands Gitanes and Gauloises would be under the same umbrella as the Fortuna and Ducados brands of Tabacalera.
