George Papandreou, flouting Greek tradition

Article Abstract:

Greek foreign minister, George Papandreou, faces real responsibilities with war in the Balkans. Greek prime minister, Costas Simitis, aims for Greece to support the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the conflict, which is an emotional issue for Greeks. Papandreou is a team player who has had an international upbringing, and his relations with US secretary of state, Madeleine Albright, are good. The Balkan issue will be difficult for him to deal with, and most Greeks tend to support the Serbs. Greece wants the end of NATO air strikes against Serbia, while also opposing Serbian ethnic cleansing.

Orthodox, but unorthodox

Article Abstract:

The Greek government supports action by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Yugoslavia, but popular opinion tends to favor the Serbs. There have been close links and a history of co-operation between Greece and Serbia, and there are religious ties through the Orthodox church. TV stations and newspapers in Greece support the Serbs. Greeks are also concerned that their country could be flooded with refugees from Albania and Macedonia if the conflict spreads.
