Germany gets back on track

Germany's leading airports are undergoing massive expansion to increase passenger capacity and to meet future demands. The new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport construction is underway after a long battle for control by construction giant Hochtief. BBF expects 17.4 Frankfurt Airport's high-speed rail links with major cities in Germany have resulted in more than 7% growth in passenger numbers from Jan to Sep 1999. Similarly, Cologne/Bonn International's new high-speed rail link is under construction.

Capacity takes off: Frankfurt looks at its options for expansion

Article Abstract:

An innovative solution to add to short-term capacity at Flughafen Frankfurt Main, Europe's second businest airport, has been developed. Germany's airport authority, together with the German air service provider DFS and Deutsche Lufthansa have established a high approach landing system/dual-threshold operation that establishes a second runway threshold. The safety assessment conducted by DFS found the high approach landing system to offer greater safety parameters than present operations.

Leipzip/Halle opens new runway

Article Abstract:

The new runway of the Leipzip/Halle Airport was inaugurated on Mar 24, 2000. The airport, with its new 3,600 m runway is able to provide capacity for unlimited intercontinental flights 24 hours a day. The chairman of the airport's Board of Management said it would improve the competitiveness of Central Germany and attract companies and jobs to the region. The amount of DM1.3 billion has been invested in the runway and other scheduled developments.
