Institutional stockholders are increasing their influence over the way companies they invest in run their business. This is resulting in several corporate heads being 'retired,' including the CEOs of IBM, Westinghouse, General Motors and American Express.

Making companies efficient: the year downsizing grew up
Article Abstract:
Downsizing at US companies was not handled properly in the early 1990s, and many protectionists decried the loss of US jobs to offshore workers. Companies have learned from past mistakes, and unemployment is down in 1996. Several companies are discussed.
