Glad to be grey: boring products, boring profits? Forget it. Some of Britain's most tightly managed companies are in pretty banal industries. What's more, they are putting manufacturing back into the limelight
Article Abstract:
The importance of manufacturing is reflected in the increased governmental support in terms of grants and training. James Halstead Group, a plastic tile-maker, sells to schools and hospitals in both the UK and other countries, such as China. Halstead believes the key is its simplified management structure and its ability to take the longer term view in all its operations. The Wolseley Group, a manufacturer of products for the building industry, operates a board strategy of low-interference and its policy on acquisitions is to remain close to its core activities.
