Article Abstract:
Illiteracy can lead to poor employment prospects and even a greater chance of being in jail, and it is often linked to dyslexia. Stanford University's Torkel Klingberg and John Gabrieli have developed a way of examining myelin sheaths that can allow dyslexia to be identified, so treatment can be provided. Dyslexics may have hearing problems related to separating phonemes, and this could be linked to faulty myelin insulation. Diffusion tensor magnetic-resonance imaging has been used for this test.
