Going green on brownfield sites: Bill Dunster's vision of a sustainable future goes far beyond zero-energy ratings. He seeks total self-sufficiency entirely on brownfield land
Article Abstract:
An urban model taking in the idea of sustainability has been developed by architect Bill Dunster. The model aims for a zero energy solution and would enable inhabitants to be self-sufficient in agriculture. It was produced at the Architectural Association where Dunster teaches. The model assumes that 11% of land will be in urban use by 2001 and that 4 million new homes will be required by 2016. It shows that it is possible to place 4 million homes onto the available brownfield sites without losing valuable agricultural land. Each house has an associated workspace, removing the need for long distance commuting, and features horticultural areas, enabling households to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
