Good King Philip?
Article Abstract:
Philip ll of Spain was the head of the first global empire which ranged from the Pacific to the Mediterranean on his death in 1598. His opponents portrayed him as a cruel despot, and he tended not to explain himself. Philip ll was favored by the Spanish political right, and a number of exhibitions are being set up in Spain to mark his anniversary. Spaniards have problems dealing with some of their history. The year 1998 also marks anniversaries of the loss of Puerto Rico and Cuba.
