Greek banks, National and Alpha, hold merger talks

National Bank and Alpha Bank announced that they were negotiating to create Greece's biggest bank with a Euro9.75 billion all-share merger. The merged bank would immediately become the dominant player of the euro zone and would be in a position to take a large regional role in the Balkans.

Alpha Bank's planned merger with National Bank of Greece is expected to bring about more consolidation within the banking sector. The merger of Greece's two largest banks, in terms of capital and assets, is valued at 9.75 billion euros.

National Bank of Greece to buy 90% of UBB
