Greek telecom emerges
Article Abstract:
Greece's next large privatization will be that of Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation (OTE), due to take place in Oct 1998 or early Nov 1998. The flotation of a further stake of between 10% and 15% in OTE is forecast to raise around $1.7 billion to $2.8 billion. Of this, half will go to OTE and half to the Greek government. The government is also seeking to sell its remaining stake in Hellenic Duty Free Shops, and plans the privatization of HelExpo-Salonica International Exhibition Centre.

Telecoms sales dominate record year
Article Abstract:
Total global privatization proceeds amounted to $161.2 billion in 1997, with the year dominated by telecoms issues. Western European led the way, raising more than $73 billion of total proceeds, with nearly $32.5 billion accrued by Italy. The sale of shares in ENI, oil and gas company, was over-subscribed, and the offer of Spanish operator Telefonica attracted more than 1.2 million domestic buyers. In South Africa, 30% of Telkom was sold for $1.3 billion.

Omani telecoms moves
Article Abstract:
Oman plans to privatize 30% of General Telecommunications Organisation (GTO). The move is intended to help reduce the country's rising budget deficit. The state-owned networking company posted a total of 56,489 subscribers at the end of 1997. GTO's total capacity is currently limited to 100,000 subscribers. GTO is also Oman's sole provider of paging and Internet services.
