The greater part of the land transportation business of Panalpina sterreich, which was given up by order of the Swiss parent, will be taken over by Austrian transport and forwarding firms Schachinger, Gebr der Weiss and Schneckenreither and not, as reported earlier, by Schneider & Penklar. This was confirmed by Heidegunde Senger-Weiss, head of the family company Gebr der Weiss. The European Commission is to carry out an extensive investigation of the competitive aspects of the takeover of the Austrian supermarket chain Julius Meinl by the German trade giant Rewe, which already owns the Billa retail group. Erste Bank has filed a bid to take a blocking minority stake in Tiroler Sparkasse (Tispa) savings bank. Also Bayerische Landesbank (which holds 46% of Austrian bank Bawag) is interested in Tispa. In the first half of 1998 Tiroler Sparkasse AG made an operating profit of Sch 165.98mn (+19%). Group profit totalled Sch 171.95mn (+15%).
