The greater part of the land transportation business of Panalpina sterreich, which was given up by order of the Swiss parent, will be taken over by Austrian transport and forwarding firms Schachinger, Gebr der Weiss and Schneckenreither and not, as reported earlier, by Schneider & Penklar. This was confirmed by Heidegunde Senger-Weiss, head of the family company Gebr der Weiss. Gebr der Weiss thus continues its expansion in the region of the Alps and the Danube (Austria, Switzerland, southern Germany, northern Italy, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia), where it already has an advantage over competitors because it knows the markets. Article Abstract:

The European Commission is to carry out an extensive investigation of the competitive aspects of the takeover of the Austrian supermarket chain Julius Meinl by the German trade giant Rewe, which already owns the Billa retail group. The investigation that will take up to 4 months is to look at the market dominance of Rewe, which in eastern Austria gains a market share of more than 50%. The Commission is also concerned about Rewe's power towards its suppliers, most of which are medium-sized companies.

Erste Bank has filed a bid to take a blocking minority stake in Tiroler Sparkasse (Tispa) savings bank. Also Bayerische Landesbank (which holds 46% of Austrian bank Bawag) is interested in Tispa. In the first half of 1998 Tiroler Sparkasse AG made an operating profit of Sch 165.98mn (+19%). Group profit totalled Sch 171.95mn (+15%).
