Guidant to acquire a rival manufacturer of heart devices for about $800 million

Article Abstract:

Guidant Corp. of Indianapolis, IN, a manufacturer of pacemakers, defibrillators and other heart devices, revealed that it will acquire the Intermedics pacemaker division of Sulzer Medica Ltd. of Switzerland for about $800 million. The former medical-device business of Eli Lilly & Co. has reportedly entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Intermedics division, which manages a sales force of 200 in the US and 200 in other countries. According to Kurt H. Kruger, a medical-device analysts for NationsBanc, the purchase will not only boost the number of Guidant's sales force to around 550, but it will also strengthen its No. 2 position in the cardiac-rhythm devices market.
