Alchemy Partners injected 234 million pounds sterling of private equity into a total of 21 deals in 1998. This firm has rapidly expanded to become one of the leading private equity providers in the UK. It has focused on a number of turn-around situations, including designer and manufacturer of business forms and labels Moore Paragon. The leading equity arranger in major UK buyouts in 1998 was 3i, with a total of 53 investments worth 309 million pounds sterling.

HSBC Private Equity (HPE) was established in 1968 and has been involved in over 400 transactions covering the UK and Europe. HPE closed its external funds pool with 700 million pounds sterling in 1997, with the intention of investing a large proportion in European projects. Previous transactions have included the 132 million pounds sterling management buy-in of Finnish Chemicals and the 63 million pounds sterling management buyout of French-based Manoir.
