HSBC recruits Copley for U.S. research post

Article Abstract:

In light of recent conflicts of interest charges brought against 10 global investment banks, HSBC Holdings PLC is revamping its approach to securities analysis. Instead of focusing its research on individual companies, the British bank plans to assess economic issues and securities as they pertain to broad industrial sectors. U.S. analyst Graham Copley has been hired to head the company's new initiative in New York.

Less than two years after former investment bank co-head John Studzinski announced big merger plans, HSBC Holdings PLC is struggling, and Mr. Studzinski is no longer with the firm. Stuart Gulliver, now head of investment banking, feels his division, whose profits rose 37% in the first half of 2006, is now going in the right direction.

HSBC's Gulliver plans investment bank shake-Up

Article Abstract:

Stuart Gulliver is to be appointed Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Holdings PLC of the United Kingdom. Mr. Gulliver is conducting a sweeping review of the financial services giant that may result in restructuring. Net profit was down 18 percent to $2.3 billion in the first half of 2005 from $2.79 billion in 2004.
