HUNGARY: BRICOSTORE EXPANDS

Article Abstract:

Along with many other European retail companies Bricostore, part of the Bresson Group, has expanded into Hungary. The latest outlet will be on the outskirts of Budapest covering 10,000 sq m and will sell DIY and garden supplies plus home decorating materials. Unlike other European companies operating in Hungary who rely upon importing stock, Bricostore will also source from local suppliers. The company came to Hungary in 1997 and has since opened 4 outlets. Its strength it believes relies upon recruiting local people to manage its stores; and forming strong supply links with local firms who have seen the long term advantages of trading with the group by its terms. It has also issued its own loyalty card with 50,000 regular customers, in addition to catalogues going to individual homes. In view of the success it has seen in Hungary, Bricostore now plans to move into Romania.

Article Abstract:

As part of a partnership agreement with local group, Doverie, the French DIY retail chain, Mr Bricolage, is now present in Bulgaria. The French group has taken a capital stake in Doverie and transferred some of its know-how, while the latter takes care of the financial risk and the logistics. Doverie may also have access to openings in Macedonia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This is the first outlet in eastern Europe for Mr Bricolage, and the first for any French retail group of its kind. It opened a 4,600m outlet in Bulgaria, on 30 November 2000, and aims to have five in major cities in the years to come.
