Hail to the chief

Article Abstract:

Former shipping magnate Tung Chee-hwa, who has recently been appointed chief executive of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, which will come into existence in 1997, will face many political, economic and social challenges. He has promised that his administration will not simply be a puppet of China, but there are still considerable fears about Hong Kong's future. Tung Chee-hwa has shown himself to be a very astute businessman, and it is hoped that he will be able to transfer this talent into politics.

The trials of martyr Lee: with 1997 only a year away, he's Beijing's headache now

Article Abstract:

Beijing must decide how it wants to handle outspoken Hong Kong politicians who disagree with its line, and the decision will largely shape the colony's economic and political future. Insiders predict Democratic Party head Martin Lee will promptly be removed by force from the Legislative Council, possibly fueling a martyrdom complex and giving him the authority of a Lech Walesa or Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest. Hong Kongers would apparently prefer Anson Chan as governor, in any case.
