Handheld sonar aids clearance divers
Article Abstract:
The University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory has come up with a hand-held sonar that divers can use in zero-visibility underwater operations. The device, called the Limpet Mine Imaging Sonar (LIMIS), operates at 2MHz and has a 0.3 deg resolution. It has a maximum range of 15 meters and has a range resolution of 1.8 mm at a distance of 3 m. A mask-mounted video monitor presents images from the sonar that are updated every tenth of a second for ranges as far as 9 m. LIMIS can also send real-time imagery to a ship-borne display and has memory for 50 images.

Kaman Aerospace has reported developments on the previously classified Appril Showers pod-mounted sensor suite which is claimed to detect submerged submarines at sufficient depths to obtain operationally useful information. Program expenditures have already totaled around US$20 million and there is no more funds available for additional work. Kaman is looking for alternative sponsors to restore funding which it estimates to cost only a further US$3.5 million to complete.
