Article Abstract:
Iceland has adopted an independent stance, but this does not mean that it is insular. It reaches out as much to the UK and the US as to other Nordic countries, and has also shown eagerness to cooperate with Canada, Russia and Norway. The most significant development in Iceland over recent years has been economic liberalization, much of which has been prompted by membership of the European Economic Area, through which Iceland gains access to the European Union's free-trade market, except for food and fish.
