Healthy building syndrome: on the Rushton Street Surgery in Hackney, Penoyre and Prasad has turned necessity to advantage in overcoming site, programme and budget constraints to design a building that is romantic but practical
Article Abstract:
The Rushton Medical Centre was designed by Penoyre & Prasad to accommodated four GP practices along with ancillary resources. The site had restrictions reducing the buildable area, and the practices are located on different floors. The building incorporates a caretakers flat, and a large multi-purpose space. The design concentrated on achieving high insulation and energy costs are expected to be kept to a minimum. The superstructure consists of a steel framework supporting pre-cast concrete beams. A cost analysis is provided, along with working details.

Building for health
Article Abstract:
The Building Research Establishment's (BRE's) Healthy Building Centre has been set up to provide a centrally coordinated service for private and professional clients who have a sick building. Sick buildings are caused by a number of reasons, including insufficient ventilation and house-dust mites. The centre will act as a focal point for research, medical and legal professionals at all stages of development. Between one third and one half of buildings are sick, according to World Health Organisation research.
