Heinz's quarterly earnings fall, hurt by cost of promotional push

Article Abstract:

HJ Heinz & Co. posted a decline of 3.3% in its fiscal earnings for the first-quarter of 1999. The results reflect the company's ongoing improvement in market share. The market gains were caused by Heinz's aggressive promotional campaigns. Investors raised concerns with the company's plan to fund a $29 milion (27.3 million euros) launch of the Boston Market Home Meal product line. Heinz plans to fund the line from the upcoming sale of its weight-control business.
