High hopes: Dow Jones introduces three China indexes
Article Abstract:
Dow Jones and Company has introduced three stock indexes based on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges that it hopes will become benchmarks like the Dow Jones Industrial Average has in the US. The indexes are the Dow Jones Shanghai Index, the Dow Jones Shenzhen Index and the Dow Jones China 88 Index, a composite of the two official exchanges. The indexes are based on "A" share prices despite the fact that these shares at present can be purchased only by Chinese citizens. Some investment professionals feel that these indexes are being established prematurely.

Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's ailing economy may be saved from true malaise by the Chek Lap Kok airport's $20.4 billion price tag, boosting payrolls and infrastructure investment throughout the colony in 1995 and 1996. Hong Kong still faces a GDP growth rate slowing to well below 5.5%, retail sales down 2.5%, unemployment as high as 3.1%, and imports of HK$582.4 billion compared to exports of HK$508.7 billion. The US Federal Reserve's 0.25% cut in interest rates may help, however.
