Holiday rally isn't expected

Article Abstract:

The holiday season isn't likely to increase stock prices in Hong Kong until the 1999 Lunar New Year. According to investment analysts, stock prices will decline despite the positive investor sentiment due to overvaluation of stocks. In support of analysts' fears, the Hang Seng Index suffered a 7.5% drop in Dec 1998 from a 32% increase in Nov. Furthermore, the government announced a 7.5% decline in economic growth. Contrary to market expectations, the drop in interest rates which caused a negative inflation rate may actually raise real interest rates.

Pakistan starting a rebound

Article Abstract:

Pakistan's role in the United States' bombing of Afghanistan and the subsequent pledge of foreign aid has boosted the country's Karachi Stock Exchange. The country's stock market has also benefited from stronger-than-expected profits from major companies. This renewed interest in Pakistan reverses the three-year-old trend that saw international investors fleeing the country.
