HSBC investors are feeling under the weather
Article Abstract:
HSBC Holdings's stock price has plunged, due to low earnings in 2000, a lackluster outlook for earnings growth, and difficulties in the Hong Kong property market and in world equity markets in general. Morgan Stanley recently said that HSBC's stock price was justified only if the bank expected superior revenue performance. Analysts agree that HSBC remains a major world banking power, well positioned for future growth.

Hong Kong banking sector may still be worth pursuing; analysts recommend such bets as Dao Heng and Dah Sing, citing room for appreciation
Article Abstract:
Fiduciary Trust International Managing Dir Thomas Duffy and other fund managers are confident that bank stocks will continue to yield profits following their meteoric rise. Despite the contention of other analysts that banks no longer offer an attractive prospect for further investment, Duffy continues to invest in small- and mid-sized banks such as the Dao Heng Bank Group Ltd, Dah Sing Financial Holdings Ltd and Bank of East Asia Ltd. It is expected that bank margins will rise from 2% to 3% in 1999 as bank-deposit rates continue to fall and interbank lending rates stabilize.

ANZ debt issue proves point
Article Abstract:
The robust performance of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd's (ANZ) bond issues prove that the domestic market can be a cost-effective source of funding for domestic banks and can compete with more established markets such as the Eurobond market. ANZ issued a $190.8 million of 5.25% fixed-rate transferable certificates of deposit to mature on Mar 15, 2001. Moreover, a previous transaction yielded a 14 basis points over swaps compared to the Eurobond's 11 basis points over swaps from a $350 million floating-rate note issue to mature on Jan 28, 2002.
