Hong Kong: fortune favours the brave

Article Abstract:

First Pacific looked to invest in Asia during 1998 even though its turnover had declined by 40% in 1997. First Pacific paid $197 billion for a 5.9% share of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company. First Pacific sold its share of Pacific Link for $350 million and its 40% share of Dutch company Hagemeyer for $1.7 billion. The money was needed to help pay $400 million of debts, which had reached $2.9 billion. Some $600 million was used to help its subsidiary companies which had been suffering due to the economic decline in Asia. Some $900 million was for new acquisitions.

Learning to improve reliability during system development

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to develop a theoretical model that embraces the practical elements of reliability growth testing and addresses the issues surrounding its implementation from data collection to communication of the results back to the decision makers. The resulting mathematical model has managed to combine failure data with engineering judgement in the estimation of reliability growth. Reliability growth testing has been defined as a planned test, analyze and fix process that test engineering systems under simulated and accelerated environments.
