Hong Kong-based real estate company Wharf Holdings Ltd. and parent Wheelock and Co. have been criticized for failing to realize many of their plans to diversify into areas such as cable television, telecommunications, infrastructure and investment banking. Critics said that the companies' failure to live up to their promises put them in danger of losing their credibility. However, officials of the two companies contend that they have not made any grandiose plans that they cannot fulfill.

Emperor's clients complain about losses during critical review period in colony

The accusations come at an importune time for the company, as Hong Kong authorities are evaluating whether to renew its license for foreign-exchange trading. Emperor officials are stressing that the Chinese company is only an affiliate which is separate and distinct from the Hong Kong firm.

Highway woes in China shade Hopewell's image

Construction delays, cost overruns and lower-than-expected revenues at the 76-mile Hong Kong-Guangzhou highway has undermined the reputation of its builder, business tycoon Gordon Wu and his Hopewell Holdings Ltd. The highway's many problems have caused concern among investors and this has been reflected in a 30% decline in the company's share price over the last five months.
