House Republicans seek clear U.S. voice on Taiwan

Article Abstract:

House Republican legislators urged the Clinton administration to establish a 'clear and unambiguous' foreign policy that will discourage China from taking military action against Taiwan. They urged Congressional leaders to transform a strong Republican Policy Committee statement on Taiwan into a resolution supported by both houses. In the past, White House administrations from both parties pursued ambiguous policies regarding Chinese-Taiwanese relations which has emboldened China to frequently use military activities to threaten Taiwan.

Interpretation of 1982 accord underlies dispute over deployment of U.S. ships

Article Abstract:

US Sec. of State Warren Christopher and China's foreign minister Qian Qichen are planning another meeting to address the implications of US intervention to the China-Taiwan dispute and to its relationship with China. At the heart of the dispute is China's violation of a 1982 accord where it stated that it will work for a 'peaceful resolution of the Taiwan question.' The US says that China's use of military maneuvres at the Taiwan strait is a blatant violation of the accord.

U.S. still open to Asian steel: flood of inexpensive imports draws little reaction in Washington

Article Abstract:

US Pres Bill Clinton's mild response to the steel industry's complaints about the flooding of inexpensive steel imports from Asian countries has irked steelworkers. United Steelworkers of America and 12 US steel companies are calling for heavy taxes on the imports. Steelworkers are comparing the cautious action of the Clinton administration to that of Pres Reagan who in 1984 implemented voluntary import quotas on steel imports from Japan, South Korea and the European Union.
