How one nimble fund gained in Jakarta despite crisis: flexibility helped Schroeder-Panin Dana jump 14% since May 1997 as broader market was falling

Article Abstract:

The surprising ability of the Schroeder-Panin Dana Prestasi Mutual Fund to post a 14% gain on its share's unit price despite a 29% drop in the broader funds market lies in the fund's flexibility. PT Schroeder Investment Management Indonesia designed the rupiah-denominated fund to take advantage of companies that exhibit short-term recovery in the market. This form of opportunism has changed the composition of the portfolio from auto, banking and consumer stocks to mining, palm-oil, and pulp and paper products stocks. The fund is not for foreign investors, since any gains in the fund's unit price will be quickly erased by the volatile trading of the rupiah in the international currency markets.

CSM casts a chill

Article Abstract:

Cycle & Carriage of Singapore will offer a bulk of its 43% stake at small capitalization company CSM to a lesser known Excoplex of Malaysia. Cycle & Carriage will also purchase most of CSM's assets in a deal regarded to be framed to prevent minority stockholders from earning profitably. If the remaining 11% stake of the company is also acquired by Excoplex, a general offer to minority stockholders will be made at 6.75 ringgit per share.
