How safe are fire doors?
Article Abstract:
A fire door should be constructed to withstand fire or combustion, although many products fail to comply with strict guidelines laid down by the British Standards Institution. Further problems can be caused by poor workmanship when doors are installed, creating serious failure of the door to serve as a protection against fire. Regulating bodies are considering the use of microchips to provide a complete history of a particular door, which would help specifiers when refitting a building.

Drawings for world's tallest building found in London flat
Article Abstract:
Plans for the Russia Tower which would have been the tallest building in the world, designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merril, have been found in an East London council flat. The building was to have been sited in the centre of Moscow, and the plans included artists' impressions and floor plans. SOM in New York claimed that the plans had been stolen, and it ended its involvement with the Russia Tower in 1993, due to lack of progress and problems in securing funding.

Wither contracting?
Article Abstract:
The move in Nov 1995 by Wimpey to swap its construction and aggregates operations for Tarmac's housing business has sparked off rationalisation in the UK contracting sector. Even the most successful companies are not exempt from speculation about their future, and many are looking at disposing of non-core operations. Some are likely to abandon contracting, focusing instead on housing.
