How the Last All-British Car Firm Was Saved from Oblivion

Article Abstract:

Five years ago in 1978, a small unassuming man named Michael Edwardes took over as chairman of British Leyland Motor Corp. The company was staggering under the result of repeated strikes, weak management and political hand-holding. British Leyland was formed in 1968 as result of mergers of several small car companies. The merger was never really successful and one of Edwardes' first tasks was to instill a sense of belonging in the company and a sense of commitment. After that the other areas could be tackled; reduction of personnel and improvement of productivity. It took five years, but Edwardes succeeded at what he had set out to do.
