IBM executive oversees PC empire in Asia while enjoying a nice green

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) General Manager Ted Saeki oversees the company's personal systems division in Asia. Saeki, who has a passion for golf, relies on his digital and analog phones to let him in touch with IBM's business. There is also IBM high-tech gadgetry such as the ChipCard VW-200, a credit-card sized, Type III PCMCIA card with a tiny keyboard on one side and an liquid-crystal-display screen on the other. Saeki also credits himself for reaching a joint venture in 1996 with South Korea-based LG Electronics that helped IBM became among the top five brands in South Korea.

Online shopping is becoming more popular and firms such as Visa, Mastercard International and IBM have been quick at taking advantage of this trend by producing products that make it safe to use the Internet as shopping medium. Nevertheless, there will be a certain segment of the shopping population that would still prefer doing it the old way because of the sheer enjoyment that they derive from the physical act of window shopping before the purchase.

NTT Data likely to shine

Shares of NTT Data Communications Systems Corp of Japan, the biggest systems integrator in the country, have jumped 9% since Jan 12, 1998 despite the dreary stock market. NTT Data shares is trading for 6.65 million yen, or $53,825, per share. The company produces high-speed information networks which provides a solution for the inefficiencies that curb the growth of numerous Japanese companies.
