If you can't lick em...
Article Abstract:
A confluence of trends has sent the prices of collectable Hong Kong and China stamps soaring to five times their worth a decade ago, in 1986. Many mainlanders view stamps as an investment rather than as speculation, and as a portable form of money that is relatively easy to convert. Increasing wealth on the mainland, the uncertainty and excitement of Hong Kong's approaching handover to Chinese control, and what some observers consider a natural tendency among the Chinese to collect things, all fuel the fervor.

Honour thy father
Article Abstract:
Asian leaders are struggling with an inappropriate and inefficient set of old-age pensions and plans as their populations age rapidly. By 2030 the proportion of people aged 60+ in E Asia will double, from 10% to 20%. The World Bank's 1994 report 'Averting the Old Age Crisis' advocates a blend of the two social-insurance schemes common in E Asia: defined-benefit, in which an established amount is paid out, and defined-contribution, in which workers can choose who manages their predetermined retirement savings.

Keeping up appearances
Article Abstract:
Hongkong Bank was the leading Hong Kong company for the fourth consecutive year in 1996, at a time when many other companies in Hong Kong with a British heritage were becoming increasingly overshadowed by Chinese concerns. However, it is keen not to be regarded as a colonial bank, and to attract Chinese customers. For this reason, it is focusing on its technical sophistication and financial abilities, and hopes in this way to be accepted in China too. Other leading Hong Kong companies are discussed.
