In the name of the father

Article Abstract:

Most ordinary Turks continue to regard Kemal Ataturk positively. They see him as having played a key role in securing the country's independence and in preventing partition. However, he is often seen less positively outside Turkey, as reflected in controversy prompted by plans to make a film of his life. Actor Antonio Banderas, who was to have played Ataturk, received hate-mail from Greek and Armenian Americans, and has now withdrawn from the project. There is now a trend among younger Turks towards demystifying Ataturk and removing his image from politics.
