In traffic-choked Kuala Lumpur, stubborn cabbies go nowhere fast

Article Abstract:

One of the major problems that travelers to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, face is taxi service. Taxi drivers prefer to just park rather than brave traffic jams on construction-clogged and crowded streets, at meter charges that they claim are too low to bring profit. Some hotels resort to deals with taxi firms for a fleet of cars serving their guests, but many drivers refuse to ferry passengers who do not agree to pay the fare they want. Many business travelers also resort to renting cars. Taxi service is, however, expected to improve in 1997, when the light rapid transit system begins to operate.
