Independence?
Article Abstract:
Relations between Serbia and Montenegro have deteriorated since 1997 and Montenegro could hold a referendum on independence from Yugoslavia. The German mark has been adopted as the currency in use in Montenegro following a loss in value of the Yugoslav dinar. The Yugoslav national bank has halted payments of pensions to those living in Montenegro, while Serbian police have prevented trucks carrying fresh food from entering Montenegro. It is unclear whether there would be a majority favoring independence if a referendum were held.

The next Kosovo?
Article Abstract:
There is concern that conflict could arise in Montenegro, Yugoslavia, where the government is seeking to distance itself from Serbia and gain greater autonomy. There have been disagreements between the Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milosevic, and the Montenegrin president, Milo Djukanovic. Western governments are concerned that war could result from Montenegro's bid to achieve greater autonomy. There is domestic pressure for separation from Serbia, and a referendum may be held on the issue.
