India outlines new privatisation agenda

Article Abstract:

India's CMP privatisation document cites the restructuring of public sector enterprises (PSEs) as a significant issue, with management transferred to professional groups or workers' co-operatives. The government is also considering withdrawing the public sector from non-strategic areas. A Disinvestment Commission will be set up to advises on the moves under consideration.

New funds chase emerging stocks

Blakeney Management of the UK, consultant and fund manager, is launching a new Blakeney Investors fund aimed at investing in newly privatised shares in Egypt and Cyprus. They are also looking at opportunities in Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Oman and east Africa. Also, the National Commercial Bank has launched the Arab Equity Fund in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi King promises privatisation

Saudi Arabia is committed to the privatisation of companies such as Saudia, the national airline, Saudi Telephone and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic). King Fahd aims to introduce practical policies for several privatisation and financing operations, as well as give the private sector an expanded role in moving the national economy.
