Article Abstract:

Italian chewing gum maker Perfetti is entering India's market to compete with six local companies, Parke Davis, Spain's Generale di Confectionare, and US-based Wrigley. India offers a young market with 900 million people who presently spend only $9.6 million on the product annually. Perfetti will market Big Babol, a bubble-blowing gum for children aged 5 to 13; Brooklyn, which emphasizes fresh breath for lovers; and Center Fresh, with a flavored liquid center. Taking on the fiefdoms: Ratan Tata says his group needs new blood

Article Abstract:

Ratan Tata, chairman of the Tata group holding company since 1991, discusses the future of the giant Indian conglomerate. He is willing to divest the group of some of its holdings, a move necessitated by the opening of India to foreign competition. He plans to make Tata Sons a true holding company rather than just an investment company, and hopes to boost the group's equity by concentrating its resources. He believes that partnerships with foreign companies require the proper chemistry between the participants.
