Industrial actions
Article Abstract:
Legal action is being taken against companies that used slave labor in the 1939 to 1945 war. Companies accused include MAN, Daimler-Benz, BMW, Siemens and Volkswagen. There were some 7.6 million people used as slaves in the war, and some 500,000 are alive. German companies have paid little to Nazi victims, and claim that the German government should be liable. They are beginning to show signs of being prepared to pay compensation, however, arguing in terms of their moral responsibility. Siemens has paid some 20 million German marks, and Volkswagen has set aside 45 million marks to be spent on humanitarian projects.

Cut-off
Article Abstract:
The UK government carefully timed the release of its white paper on asylum policy to ensure that it would attract minimum publicity. The government is clearly attempting to deal with the backlog of 75,000 people seeking political asylum, but seems to be adopting an arbitrary approach to its treatment of asylum-seekers. In almost all cases, the around 10,000 asylum-seekers who made an application before Jul 1993 will be permitted to remain in the UK. The applications of a further 20,000 who applied before Dec 31, 1995, will also be regarded sympathetically.

How sorry?
Article Abstract:
Apologies of leaders of the Cambodian Khmer Rouge are not seen as enough by most Cambodians, who wish to understand why the Khmer Rouge inflicted misery on Cambodia. The public accepts the reintegration of ordinary Khmer Rouge followers into society, but not the leadership. King Sinhouak has stated that he will not provide an amnesty to leaders of the Khmer Rouge, though they have yet to be charged. Human rights groups favor holding a trial for the leaders.
