Intrigue on 19th Street

Article Abstract:

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is usually headed by a European, often from France, though Germany has put forward Caio Koch-Weser as a candidate. Treasury secretary, Larry Summers, opposes the German candidate, and US opposition means that he is unlikely to be chosen. Stanley Fischer, who ranks second at the IMF, is an able candidate, and has backing from developing economies, but is from the US. A stronger European candidatye may be put forward. There is a need for reform in the way the IMF head is chosen especially given the controversies surrounding the IMF, and the difficulty of its task.

The right boss for the Fund

Article Abstract:

There is a need to choose a new head for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and US Treasury secretary, Larry Summers, opposes Caio Koch-Weser. He is right to do so. The IMF can play an important role in helping to prevent crises, and selecting a head should not be an issue of national pride. Deputy managing director of the IMF, Stanley Fischer, is the best man for the post, but Europeans believe that they have a right to the job. One compromise could be to have a European to tackle public relations, as the IMF's head, leaving Fischer to run the Fund.
