Inventive solution for a troubled North London site

Article Abstract:

The redevelopment of Camden Goods Yard in London, England, to provide social housing, presented several design challenges for Pollard Thomas & Edwards Architects (PT&E). The problem of access was solved by the building of a new road as part of the construction of a supermarket in the central part of the site. However, this meant the housing area was not split into two parts. Each part has been treated very differently, in response to the different problems of the sites. The southern part overlooks the canal and has a strong industrial history, while the northern part is near the railway line.

Directing Docklands' last act

Article Abstract:

Eric Sorenson has been chief executive of the LDDC since 1991. He was previously head of the inner cities directorate between 1984 and 1987, and head of the Cabinet Office's urban-policy unit between 1987 and 1990. He feels that the LDDC's relationship with Newham and Southwark local authorities is good, although negotiations with Tower Hamlets over the hand over of the docks on the Isle of Dogs are making slow progress.
