Irving Stevens
Article Abstract:
Irving Stevens was a hobo who became famous when he was elected hobo king in Iowa, at a convention in 1988. US hobos are a type of causal labor, and are associated with myths linked to cowboys and freight trains. Stevens began traveling in order to seek work, and settled down after 1945, when work became more plentiful, marrying and producing six children. The life of a hobo is still attractive to some younger people in the US in modern times, and older hobos give them advice, such as not to travel alone.
