Is the general manager going the way of the dinosaur?

Article Abstract:

Changing world markets are forcing industrialized nations to look for new activities, highly developed services, high-quality products and a return on investments in developing countries. This in turn has required general managers to develop a new range of talents and capabilities, including the ability to develop and use sophisticated information systems and to bring sufficient expertise to manufacturing processes. Talents required of this new breed of general managers include: scientific-technical backgrounds; well-developed communications abilities; imagination and foresight; and a background in the humanities. Perhaps the most important quality of the next generation of managers will be their ability to work in a high-technology environment, where change is the norm.

The incredible, invisible Saatchi brothers: advertising may never be the same again

Article Abstract:

Saatchi and Saatchi PLC, a British advertising agency run by brothers Maurice and Charles Saatchi, has been able to turn the British advertising industry on its ear in the ten years since it first entered the market, having grown to be the largest agency in Europe and the eighth largest in the world in 1983. The company expects to be among the top ten agencies in each of the top ten world markets by 1986, and one London competitor claims the brothers will be satisfied with nothing less than the number one spot in the world. The role of strategic acquisitions in the company's growth and the move to Madison Avenue in 1982 are described. Also described is the company's management structure and how it has helped in the firm's growth.
